How a repair visit goes

From your call to a finished repair, in five steps

A technician pulling a blue shoe cover over a work boot on a front porch, tool bag beside the open door
  1. Within 15 minutes

A text with your 2-hour arrival window, for requests sent 7am to 9pm.

  2. Before arrival

A second text when your technician is on the way. Shoe covers go on at the door.

  3. About 45 minutes

We test the whole system and write down every reading, from refrigerant pressures to the amp draw on each motor.

  4. Before any work

The record and the repair price, in writing. Nothing starts until you say yes.

  5. The same visit

Most repairs finish on the spot from parts on the truck. You keep the old part, and the warranty is on your receipt.

The record

What you get after every visit

We're a repair company that shows its work. You can't climb into your attic to check what a technician tells you, so we write it all down, reading by reading, including the parts we couldn't reach. The record is yours whether or not you hire us for the repair.

  • Check the diagnosis. The readings and the failed part are on the page.
  • Send it to whoever decides: your landlord, or a parent you're helping.
  • Show it to another company if you want a second price.

Failed part

Contactor. The contacts are pitted and burnt, so the compressor and outdoor fan were getting no power. The old part is left with you.

Checked and sound

Run capacitor 45/5 µF, tested 44.2/4.9. Outdoor coil. Disconnect and fuses. Drain line and float switch. Thermostat wiring.

Could not check, and why

Evaporator coil. The attic hatch was blocked by stored boxes, so the coil cabinet stayed closed. We can check it next visit.

Repair or replace

14 years × $ =

Under 5,000, we recommend the repair. Over 5,000, both prices go side by side.

One year on parts and labor from the day we finish.Nothing starts until you approve the price.

One rule, printed on every record

Repair or replace: how we decide

Multiply the system's age by the repair price. That number decides which way we recommend, and it goes on your record with your numbers in it.

AGE × REPAIR PRICEAge in years, repair price in dollars

Under 5,000

We recommend the repair.

Over 5,000

We price the repair and a replacement side by side. You choose.

R-22 systems

We always price both. R-22 refrigerant hasn't been made or imported in the US since 2020.

Try it with your numbers

The year the system was made is on the rating plate on the side of the unit.

12 × $300 = 3,600

Under 5,000. We'd recommend the repair.

Holding another company's replacement quote? We test the system for $89 and give you the same written record.

LA houses

The houses we work in

The house changes how a repair goes. These are the ones we see most in Los Angeles.

Horizontal gas furnace with its panel off in a tract-house attic, coil and ducts attached, a flue rising through the roof and a flashlight on the burners

Pre-war wall and floor furnaces

Gas heaters from the 1920s to the 1940s. We repair the pilot and the valve, and say in writing when one is past fixing.

Valley attics past 140°F

Attic furnaces and coils bake all summer. We check the drain pan and the duct joints while we're up there.

Bungalows with no ducts

Mini-splits cool and heat room by room without opening plaster. The lines run outside in a painted cover.

1950s and 60s tract homes

One undersized return starves the system of air. If that's why the back bedroom stays hot, the record says so.

Flat-roof duplexes

The whole system sits in one cabinet on the roof. Tell us how the roof is reached and we bring the right ladder.

The utility you're on

LADWP, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena run their own power. SCE serves most of the rest, and SoCalGas most of the gas. On a new system we file the rebate paperwork with yours.

Questions

What people ask us on the phone

Not answered here? Call and ask.

Call (310) 857-2520

Do you charge to come out?

Yes, $89. We find the fault and give you the price in writing. If you go ahead, the fee comes off the bill. Replacement quotes are free.

Can it wait until morning?

Often, yes. If it only blows warm air and nobody at home is at risk from the heat, switch it off and take the first window tomorrow. Call now if you smell burning or the breaker trips again after a reset.

Is a 14-year-old system worth fixing?

Often, yes. Fourteen years times a $300 repair is 4,200. That's under 5,000, so we'd recommend the repair. Over 5,000, you get both prices and choose.

Do you work on wall furnaces and mini-splits?

Yes. Wall and floor furnaces, attic and closet furnaces, heat pumps and ductless mini-splits, as well as central air.

What if the repair doesn't hold?

We come back. Every repair and installation we do carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. If our work or a part we fitted fails within a year of the day we finished, we come back and put it right at no charge. It is separate from the manufacturer's warranty on the equipment.

Who pulls the permit on a new system?

We do. We pull it and book the inspection, and we file the rebate paperwork with your utility. You pay the city's permit fee to the city directly.

Do you charge more at night?

No. A visit at 2am on a Sunday costs the same as one at 10am on a Tuesday, and so does the repair.
